The following is an article written in the early days that can provide important references;

Since the original “Shaman Believing”  of animism, traditional Chinese Taoism and folk religions had almost included the mountains, rivers, trees, flowers, table wares, desks, stoves, chairs, bed rails and door beams were all assigned and categorized with different deities especially in the general folk religions. Among them, there were many "deified" ghosts and elves (originally belonged to lower level such as local community deity, the kitchen deity and the soldiers deities escorting the Major Deity), even most of the ghosts were originally without a formal title.   And in the folk religions, many of civilians were clearly plagued by these faking  ghosts (in Chinese saying the fox pretending as tiger to show the brave)  and here is a story from the folktale about  the worshipped deity was not necessary the true “Saint spirit”.

There was a scholar named Li Haizhong. In order to attend the Autumn National Exam, he rented a ship from Suzhou to Huai.   Suddenly there was an old neighbor named Wang to ask for a boat ride. Li agreed.  But neighbor clearly expressed that he was not a human but a ghost during that evening in the boat ride. His trip purpose was to get revenged on an official who was in the legal department of Beijing. Because that official was also a relative of Li--Li was trying to mediate the situation so could save the official’s life.

The ghost of the surname Wang finally agreed that as long as Official was willing to pay back the money then he would not hurt his life. After Li and ghos visited the capital, the official was suddenly sick with mental illness because of the ghosts. After Li’s mediation the ghost did not take the life from the official.

Later Li failed the test. He and ghost again returned to the South via the ship. When the ghost was on the boat, ghost only smelled and not swallowed the served foods and the hot dishes would immediately get cold.

When the ship stopped by Suqian (a small town in the Northern of Jiangsu Province), the ghost said: "There is village performance and let us watch it together!" Li agreed and watched several shows.   The ghost suddenly disappeared and Lie only overheard sound of flying sand and moving stone.  Afterward, Li had to return to the boat alone.

In the evening, the ghost actually wore a gorgeous official uniform and said, "I won't go back with you. I want to stay here to be Guandi!"

Li asked him with a big surprise: "How dare you could take the position as Guandi?"

The ghost smiled and said: "The Guanyin and Guandi in the world were all pretending by some nameless ghosts. The village shown in front of temple was a tribute to the Guandi in the village Zhongguan Temple. The ghost who was in the village posing as the emperor and accepting the villagers’ incense was more rogue than me. I was very angry then fought with him and he was defeated and ran away.

Didn’t you hear the sound of flying sand? Just because I was fighting with him..."

Finally, the ghost of the surname Wang stayed in the village, replacing the original rogue ghost, continued to pretend and accept the worship from the villagers while Li returned to his hometown and returned the money to Wang's wife. he had collected from his relative.

Although this is only a story from folktale novel, an important message revealed in this story is Chinese literati had learned about the relationship between "ghost" and "deity" in folk religion couple hundred years ago. The mysterious relationship, in simple terms, is that there was indeed deities between the heavens and the earth but that is not the idol of the woodcarving  or clay sculptures by worshipping from general people in temple.  The idols of all sizes, aged or new, fine or rough craving, different but not necessarily the genuine deity-- most of them are fakes of the solitary ghosts. Of course, these lonely ghosts are not necessarily rogue or evil spirits. However, I am afraid that it is the majority.

Well, the same questions in Taiwan are thousands of so-called "psychic people"—what spirits are they communicating? Is it the "deity" or just the "random ghost"? Are they the genuine ones? Do all psychic know for themselves and how many people in the general public can clearly distinguish it?

If the intellectuals of hundreds of years ago had such cognition, then after hundreds of years later, we are still so ignorant of the so-called "ghosts".   The worst scenarios are not worshiping the genuine deity but serve sacrifices to the fake ones.  From our ancestors and ancient sages ' conclusion so we should explore and speculate in more depth and clearly recognize:

The Deity in the temples are all "ghosts" and most of them are deceitful rogues!

P.S.Attached is another early article providing as reference:

Lightning deity specializes in striking “good deed” people!

Whether in the era of theocracy which people were short of religious wisdom until nowdays space age , including most of the Chinese and many Asian nationalities, there is still a traditional concept "the lightning would punish the bad guys".  If a person was suddenly killed by the lightning, most people would classify it to be purely natural accidents openly but still have some doubts in the mind assuming this person was doing bad things privately and unknown to public. To insist "God is watching and there is no hidden stuff" or "Sin committer could not shed away from the punishment net".  Once a person commits sinful or evil then the God will not tolerate these bad deeds. In the sky, the Jade Emperor will send Lei Gong (lightning deity) and Lei Mo (female electrical punisher) to kill him.

So people who believe in the non-filial piety or rebellious about family will be killed by Lei Gong! Those who waste food in the random and careless way will be killed by Lei Gong, too. However, I am afraid this is really a sad misconception. During early days, the vast majority of lightning area usually is in the open wilderness, at sea or on the top of the mountain butrarely were in the house.

So when the thunderstorms go on, what kind of people is more likely to stay in the wilderness, the sea or the top of the mountain? Except for a few outdoor enthusiasts who are hiking, playing windsurfing or golf, or the idiots who put their tents under the trees---the vast majority of people who are braving under thunderstorms and staying in the wild must be diligent farmers. Staying at sea must be the hardworking fishermen, and the high mountaintops may be lumber collectors, miners and even forest patrols, etc. Are these people all bad guys who are full of evil and evil?

In fact, if you look at it in different angle:  those gangsters who are bad guys and hooligans, will they work diligently in the fields at the moment of thunder and lightning, or at the top of the mountain, or fight for the sea waves for living?  At this moment of thunder and lightning, if they are not in the casino to drink, they are drinking in the lounge to play with girlfreinds, or in the darkroom to plot how to kill, rob, kidnap, extort... or hiding under some Zhongshan Building or the Central and Local Councils which are equipped with lightning rods for corruption meeting and selfishness purpose measures , or cursing each other.

For those who are rebellious and unfilially, in generally they usually refuse to support their family with hard working. They think it a scum waste but rather gambling or prostitutions. Similarly, how will they be hard working outdoors when lightning is striking?  Most of the farmers work with no break.  Only the gangsters will be drowned by the wine pool. Therefore, it seems that the two heinous gangsters and the two people who are disobedient and unfilially are obviously not the target of the thunderbolt. The raids are almost ninety-nine with those unlucky "good guys”!

So there is no Leigong (lightning deity).

If there is a Leigong and punishing the wrong person, then he is ignorant also a demon who specializes in covering the bad guys and penalize the good people.

If you are a bad person, don't worry about Leigong. If you are a good person, it is best to hide in a safe place when there is thundering.

If Lei Gong specializes in punishing bad guys then there is no need to set up the official and police departments since ancient times.

So it can be concluded that there is no Leigong!

The only exception is that lightning deity will also hit the stupid, that is, when to standing under the big tree trying to hide from the rain and there is lightning in the sky.
